Students with learning disabilities need all the help they can get to have a good education. Assistive learning technology is a valuable tool for kids.

Assistive technology for students with learning disabilities is any piece of technology that can help them learn. These electronic devices draw on a student’s strengths and compensate for his or her weaknesses. Although these do not cure children of their learning disabilities, they can help them reach their full learning potential. These technological devices are valuable tools for kids with learning disabilities.

Audio Books

Audio books may not have originally been made for those with learning disabilities, but they can be very helpful to students in and out of the classroom. Those who have a learning disability that affects their reading, such as dyslexia, may find listening to audio books easier. They may be able to better comprehend the ideas of a book if they hear it rather then read it.

To encourage reading, have books and the audio equals available to students. Encourage them to read along with what they hear and ask them to convey the stories main points and ideas when the reading section is finished. Over time and as their reading improves, students with disabilities may be weaned off of audio books.

Talking Calculators

A talking calculator has a built in speech synthesizer that reads aloud the numbers and operation signs that are displayed on the screen. This can help students with disabilities that affect their math skills such as dyscalculia. A student with a talking calculator still has to do all the work. They have to input the numbers and the signs that correlate with the problem they are solving. The calculator just makes comprehending the numbers and operations a little easier. If a child inputs a number that looks right and hears that it is actually wrong can go back and correct his or her mistake.

Tape Recorders

Tape recorders have many uses for students with all types of learning disability. Tape recorders can be used to record a teacher’s instructions. Variable speed recorders can be slowed down or sped up depending on the student’s level of comprehension. Having recorded instructions can make it easier for a student to remember his or her homework once they leave the classroom.

Tape recorders may also be used on tests. If the teacher is willing, have him or her record his or her voice as they read out the test questions. A student who has trouble reading can listen to the tape as they take the test. Students who have trouble writing may as their teacher is they could record essays or other writing assignments.

Other Assistive Technology

There are many other assistive technology tools that can help those with learning disabilities. These include:

  • speaking dictionaries
  • talking spell checkers
  • electronic worksheets
  • portable word processors
  • personal FM radio sets
  • special keyboards

Technology has a place in the classroom of a special needs child. Although these can never take the place of actual reading or writing, they can make learning these vital skills easier for children with learning disabilities. This will enable all students to have a better chance at a successful education.
